Once Upon Your Weight Loss | Overview

I’ve heard about “My Weight Loss Journey” so many times now that as soon as I hear or read it there is this cringe-y automatic eye roll thing that just happens, and I get this fake smile on my face and have to focus really hard on what comes next.

Its involuntary, guys, I promise. It happens whenever I’m presented with a cliché or overused trope, and so I’ve decided to reclaim the power over this phrase and turn “My Weight Loss Journey” [which tunes the playlist in my head to this simpering, soft violin music that usually plays in the background when a victim is being introduced] into The Hero’s Journey [cue the loud, overly dramatic orchestral blockbuster background music].

This is The Story of You, and You are the main character in it – otherwise called the Hero – and as such, you should be surrounded by strong, positive reinforcement at all times. There should definitely be an epic score playing whenever appropriate.

You might be thinking, this can’t be about me. I’m not Hero material – but you’d be wrong. Never accept that a Hero must only be a young, adventurous, outgoing person who has to fight monsters with their bare hands. Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, never even left the shire until he was 51 years old.

Take heart, it’s never too late to start out unless you are completely dead. Westley came back from mostly dead in The Princess Bride. In the Bible, Abraham started his journey when he was as good as dead. It is exactly the right time for You to start (or start again), if you are ready.

This is The Story of You. It’s just waiting for you to begin.

For most of my life I was overweight. In my 30s, I became morbidly obese, tipping the scales over 330 pounds. After trying and failing at every diet, I decided to get gastric bypass RNY weight loss surgery. Since 2016 I have been living a much healthier life, I hit my weight loss goals, but more importantly, understand weight loss now. I am determined to share what I now know.
